Product description

Alpe Wooden Hay Rack for Guinea Pigs & Rabbits

The Alpe Wooden Hay Rack is a stable wooden hay rack for guinea pigs and rabbits. Thanks to its low design, guinea pigs can easily reach the hay, while the hay stays together more neatly than when you scatter it loosely throughout the enclosure. This way, you create a clear, daily eating area for the hay in the enclosure.

The hay rack has rounded bars, a removable roof, and a flat roof that can be used as an extra surface. A well-organized hay area is particularly practical for guinea pigs and rabbits, as hay forms the basis of their daily diet and must always be available.

Why choose a wooden hay rack?

A hay rack helps to offer hay in a fixed spot. This is pleasant for both owners and animals. Guinea pigs and rabbits eat small amounts of hay throughout the day. By placing the hay in a rack, it remains more accessible and is less likely to be scattered throughout the enclosure.

At DRD, when it comes to hay racks, we primarily look at height, accessibility, stability, and daily use. This rack sits low to the ground, allowing guinea pigs to reach it easily. Furthermore, for rabbits, the flat roof provides an extra surface that can be used in the enclosure, for example as a lookout spot or a light resting place, as long as the rack remains stable.

For guinea pigs: hay always close by

For guinea pigs, hay is a daily staple. A low wooden hay rack makes it easier to offer fresh hay in a fixed spot. Guinea pigs do not have to reach up and can eat peacefully from a natural posture.

A hay rack can also help keep the hay area cleaner. Optionally, place a little loose hay on the floor to encourage natural foraging behavior, but use the hay rack as the clear primary area where you replenish fresh hay every day.

For rabbits: practical hay station with extra surface area

For rabbits, a spacious, easily accessible hay area is important. This wooden hay rack offers room to replenish hay daily and can be nicely placed in a hay corner or next to a litter box. Many rabbits enjoy eating hay while sitting at their litter box, making a fixed hay rack very practical there.

The flat roof can be used as an extra surface. Only place light items on it and check that the hay rack remains stable when your rabbit leans on it or pushes against it.

For which animals is the Alpe Wooden Hay Rack suitable?

  • Mouse: not the most logical choice. Mice use hay primarily as nesting or scaving material; this hay rack is large and less practical for mice.
  • Dwarf hamster: not the first choice. Dwarf hamsters use hay primarily as structural or nesting material in small quantities, not as daily hay food from a large hay rack.
  • Hamster: not the most logical choice. Hamsters can use some hay as nesting or landscaping material, but this hay rack is primarily designed for true hay eaters like guinea pigs and rabbits.
  • Gerbil: not the first choice. Gerbils can use hay as nesting and landscaping material, but this wooden hay rack is large and less practical due to their gnawing behavior.
  • Dwarf lattice: not suitable as a standard hay rack. Rats do not need a hay rack, and hay is usually not a logical staple for rats due to dust and limited nutritional value.
  • Rat: not suitable as a standard hay rack. For rats, we prefer low-dust bedding, digging material, tunnels, foraging toys, and Ratscaping.
  • Guinea pig: very suitable. Guinea pigs must have unlimited access to hay daily, and this low model makes the hay easily accessible.
  • Rabbit: very suitable. Rabbits need unlimited hay daily and can use this hay rack as a permanent hay spot in the enclosure.
  • Chinchilla: potentially suitable as a hay spot, but choose primarily based on enclosure, stability, and gnawing behavior. Chinchillas need fiber-rich hay daily but can work wood extensively.
  • Degu: potentially suitable as a hay spot, but check carefully for gnawing damage. Degus require a fiber-rich diet and can use hay, but they also gnaw extensively on wood.

How do you use the hay rack?

Fill the hay rack with fresh hay daily. Remove old, wet, or soiled hay in a timely manner. Place the hay rack in a stable, dry spot in the enclosure. For guinea pigs and rabbits, a spot near the resting area or toilet area is often logical, as the animals regularly eat hay there.

Usage Practical tip
Daily hay Supplement with fresh, fresh-smelling hay every day.
Hay corner Place the hay rack in a fixed spot so that your animal knows where to find the hay.
Next to toilet area For rabbits and guinea pigs, a hay area next to the toilet area can be practical.
Roof as a surface Use the small roof only for light items or as a resting place when the hay rack remains standing stably.

Why hay is so important for guinea pigs and rabbits

Hay is an important part of daily care for guinea pigs and rabbits. It supports natural chewing behavior, helps keep the digestive system active, and provides structure to the day. Therefore, sufficient fresh hay must always be available.

A hay rack makes it easier to offer hay in an attractive and accessible way. Optionally, alternate with different types of hay, such as meadow hay, herbal hay, mountain meadow hay, or timothy hay, so that your animal is encouraged to continue eating plenty of hay.

Placement and stability

Place the hay rack on a flat, stable surface. Check that the rack cannot easily tip over when your animal pulls on it, pushes against it, or sits on the lid. This is especially important for rabbits, as they often handle the furnishings a bit more forcefully.

Preferably use the hay rack indoors or in a dry, sheltered place. Wood can absorb moisture and will not last as long if it remains wet for extended periods.

Cleaning and maintenance

Regularly remove old hay from the hay rack and check that no wet or moldy residue remains. Clean the hay rack with a dry brush or a slightly damp cloth. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly before adding new hay.

Regularly inspect the wood for gnawing damage, wear, sharp edges, or loose parts. Replace the hay rack when it becomes unstable or can no longer be kept clean properly.

Good to know

Check every hay rack to ensure your animal can reach the hay safely and calmly. The head or body must not become trapped between the bars. Pay close attention to how young animals, small animals, or animals with an abnormal build use the rack, especially.

Offer the hay rack under supervision and check regularly for wear. If the wood is heavily gnawed, wet, or unstable, replacement is the best option.
