Product description

Wooden ladder for a low entrance to your guinea pig enclosure

This wooden ladder can be used as a ramp at a low enclosure entrance. A practical option when your guinea pigs can move between their enclosure and an adjoining run by themselves. It creates a gentle transition where they would otherwise need to step over a raised edge. The ladder is 40 cm long and 15 cm wide, with grooves in the walking surface for extra grip.

For this purpose, the aim is to make walking in and out comfortable. Position the ramp close to the ground with a gentle slope. When both ends fit neatly into place, it makes the daily route between the enclosure and the run a little easier.

At a glance

A practical link between the enclosure and the run

Does your guinea pig enclosure have a low opening leading to a run? A ramp can help connect the two areas. Your guinea pigs can use the same route to explore the run and return to their familiar enclosure. This is particularly useful when you have set up the run directly beside their home.

Look at the whole crossing when planning the layout. The outside of the enclosure is only part of it: your guinea pig also needs to reach the opening comfortably from the inside. If there is a drop on both sides of the entrance, each side may need its own step or ramp. One ramp does not automatically create a gentle transition on both sides.

Which guinea pigs and enclosures is this ramp suitable for?

Guinea pigs: suitable as a low walkway when the width fits your animal and the slope is gentle. Before positioning the ramp, check that your guinea pig has enough room to walk straight across it. Measure the enclosure opening too, so you know whether the ramp will fit neatly in the intended spot.

The combination of length and height determines how steep the route will be. A ramp that works well at a low step may become too steep when placed against a higher edge. Choose the location of the entrance first, then measure the difference in height. This gives you a better starting point than looking at the ladder’s length alone.

How to position the ladder as a ramp

  • Choose a low entrance with enough room on both sides.
  • Make sure the ramp rests securely on the ground and at the entrance.
  • Secure the ladder so it cannot tip or slide while your guinea pigs walk over it.
  • Keep the approach and exit clear so your guinea pigs can walk straight ahead.
  • Watch your animals when they first use it to check that the route works comfortably for them.

The Dutch pet information centre LICG recommends a slope of preferably no more than 15 degrees for guinea pigs. With a ramp length of 40 cm, this works out at a height difference of approximately 10 cm when the full length is used as the slope. If part of the ramp is needed to rest on the entrance, less length remains for the slope itself. Use this as a guide when planning a low step, rather than as a fixed installation height.

A longer ramp is usually a better choice for a higher entrance. The extra length allows you to bridge the same height difference with a gentler slope. You can find more information about ramps and guinea pig housing on the LICG website in Dutch.

Material and dimensions

  • Material: solid spruce wood.
  • Dimensions: 40 × 15 cm.
  • Design: grooved walking surface and rounded edges.
  • Contents: one ladder; an enclosure or digging box is not included.

Good to know

This ladder is also offered as an accessory for a digging box. For your guinea pigs, using it at the enclosure entrance may be particularly useful. Whether it fits there depends on the height, the opening and how securely you can position it. It is worth taking these measurements before making changes to the layout.

Can I use this to cross a high cage base?

The slope is the deciding factor. This version is best suited to a small height difference. If it sits too steeply against your cage base, choose a longer ramp or a lower entrance.

Is this a complete bridge over the edge of the enclosure?

You receive one separate ladder. Check both the route up to the opening and the route on the other side. A raised edge may need a suitable transition on both sides.
