Why choose a 4x2 cage with a 2x1 loft?

This layout is particularly interesting when you want to create extra zones but do not immediately need a larger base size. Use for guinea pigs

With a floor area of approximately 1.09 m² , this C& ^C® cage is a nice main setup for 2 guinea pigs . The loft adds extra variety but does not count towards the base floor area.

Expand for (dwarf) rabbits

This 4x2 C& ^C® cage was fundamentally developed as a full-fledged enclosure for guinea pigs. For (dwarf) rabbits, the cage without extensions is primarily suitable as an indoor play area or temporary run, not as a permanent primary enclosure. Rabbits especially need more continuous floor space to move around comfortably and to be able to lie down stretched out.

Important to know about the Coroplast tray

Coroplast is popular within the C& ^C® system because it is waterproof, lightweight, hygienic, and easy to clean. The raised edges help to better contain hay, bedding, and loose debris within the enclosure. At the same time, it is not chew-proof. If you notice guinea pigs gnawing on the edges, providing sufficient gnawing material , distractions, and enrichment often helps.

If you expand the cage later, the standard bottom tray does not automatically grow with it. For the extra section, you then choose a suitable base or finish yourself.

Good to know

The 2x1 loft is intended as an extra living zone and not as a replacement for basic floor space. For guinea pigs, the space at floor level therefore always remains the most important starting point. Build the loft sturdily and ensure a safe ramp or access so that your animals can use it safely.

If you are looking for a stay that offers more than a standard 4x2 base but remains more compact than a large loft layout, this 4x2 + loft 2x1 is a very nice middle ground. Should you wish to expand later, you can easily build further thanks to the modular system.
