Gerbil cage – choose a gerbilarium/terrarium with deep digging layer, peace and good ventilation

Gerbils are natural diggers . They create tunnels, build nest chambers, and move bedding as if it were their daily routine (spoiler alert: it is). That's why a "regular" wire cage often works less well in practice: you miss the deep digging layer and are more likely to create a mess, stress, and escape attempts. In this category, you'll find a carefully selected range of gerbil cages – with an emphasis on the most suitable type of habitat: the gerbilarium/gerbil terrarium .

At DRD Rodent Shop® , you don't choose a standard "cage," but a habitat that suits the natural behavior of gerbils. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011 .

Focus on digging
A minimum of 25 cm of digging layer (preferably more) makes the enclosure “gerbil-proof” in terms of behaviour, rest and activity.

Terrarium = the logical choice
A gerbilarium/terrarium keeps the digging layer in place and provides space for tunnels, nesting chambers and sand baths.

Choosing a Gerbil Cage – Quick Selection Guide

Looking for a choice that works best in practice? Choose a gerbilarium/terrarium with: ample floor space , a deep digging layer , and good ventilation . Get the basics right and only then add any "fun extras."

1) Choose the right type of accommodation

  • Gerbilarium / terrarium (recommended): ideal for a high ground cover layer and stable tunnels.
  • Bar cage: only useful if you also have a truly deep digging bucket solution (otherwise it is too limited).

2) Build around graves

  • Provide at least a large area with 25 cm of ground cover (preferably towards 40 cm for avid diggers).
  • Combine with nesting material so they can build a real nest chamber.

Tip: It's better to choose "right" once than to upgrade multiple times. Gerbils quickly become very adept at escaping if something goes a bit wrong.

Gerbil cage dimensions and guidelines

For gerbils, space isn't just about "walking," but especially about digging . According to Dutch guidelines (including the LICG), an enclosure of at least 100 × 50 cm is suitable for two gerbils . Ideally, add 20–25% more space for each additional gerbil. A minimum layer of bedding of 25 cm is also recommended (40 cm is even better for permanent tunnels). Interested in reading the source? See the LICG's gerbil guidelines: LICG – Mongolian gerbil .

Why a gerbilarium/terrarium is usually better than a barred cage

  • Deep ground cover without the drama: the digging layer stays where it should (instead of going through the room).
  • Peace in the group: gerbils can retreat to nesting chambers underground, which reduces stress.
  • Safer in practice: less climbing on bars, less chance of falls or "dental activities" at the enclosure.

That's why our absolute favorite for gerbils is a well-ventilated terrarium/gerbilarium like the Black Scape double grid . This type of habitat is designed to truly facilitate gerbil behavior (digging, building, and gathering).

Ventilation & lid – essential for a gerbil terrarium

A terrarium is perfect for the digging layer, but ventilation is essential. Therefore, choose an enclosure with a secure mesh lid and sufficient airflow (but not completely sealed). Also pay attention to the mesh/holes: gerbils are smarter and smaller than you might think. A good lid prevents escape and keeps curious cats/paws out.

In practice, an enclosure with extra ventilation (such as a double grille) works very well, especially with a higher bedding layer and an active gerbil group.

Gerbil Cage Setup – Build an Enclosure That “Works”

  • Digging zone: a thick layer of bedding as a base (this is the heart of the enclosure).
  • Sand bath: for coat care and digging fun: gerbil sandbox .
  • Hiding place above ground: a house or tunnel as an extra resting place: gerbil houses .
  • Place food and water wisely: place a bowl or water dish in a stable place (e.g. on a tray ) so that it is not undermined.
  • Enrichment: Gerbils thrive on the foraging challenge: play & foraging .

Checklist – Get your gerbil cage (gerbilarium) right the first time

Minimum 100 × 50 cm for 2 gerbils; larger for more animals.
At least 25 cm of ground cover (preferably more) for tunnels and nesting chambers.
Safe ventilation + sturdy lid (prevent escape).
Sand bath available for coat care and “gerbil work”.
Feed/water in a stable place (plateau or paved area) so that it is not undermined.
Enrichment/foraging to prevent boredom and frustration.

Safety

Place the enclosure out of direct sunlight and drafts . Regularly check that the lid/grid closes properly and that there are no sharp edges or gnawing damage. Introduce changes to the enclosure gradually (gerbils appreciate familiar scents and routes). If you notice any noticeable changes in behavior or condition, consult a veterinarian.

FAQ – gerbil cage / gerbilarium / gerbil terrarium

What is better: gerbil cage or gerbil terrarium?
For most gerbils, a gerbilarium/terrarium is the best choice, as it allows you to provide a deep digging layer and tunnels remain standing better.

What are good dimensions for a gerbil cage?
Guideline: at least 100 x 50 cm for two gerbils . For each additional gerbil, extra space is recommended. In practice, larger enclosures offer more peace and quiet and less hassle.

How much substrate does a gerbil terrarium need?
Aim for a minimum of 25 cm . If you really want beautiful tunnels that will last, around 40 cm is often better (depending on the substrate and layout).

Why is ventilation so important in a gerbilarium?
Because you're working with a higher ground cover layer, good ventilation helps keep the enclosure fresh and supports a stable, comfortable living environment.

Which gerbil cage do you recommend most?
If you want to make the right choice once: the Black Scape gerbilarium (double grid) is a top choice for gerbils that really want to dig, build and live the way gerbils are meant to be.
