The Trixie Tilde House 39 cm is a spacious bark wood house for rats and guinea pigs. The house has an open bottom, a door, a small window, and a soft roof terrace with a removable cushion. This makes it not only a hiding place but also an extra relaxation spot on top of the house.
For rats, the house can be a nice combination of sheltering, climbing, and resting on top. For guinea pigs, it is primarily a sheltered resting place with a natural appearance. Not every guinea pig will actively use the roof, but the house itself does provide a quiet place to sit under or inside. Always place the house low and stable so that it cannot slide, tip over, or sag.

✔ Soft roof terrace with removable cushion
✔ Great as a resting place, shelter, and relaxation spot all in one
A good little house provides animals with a recognizable resting place. Rats and guinea pigs both benefit from shelter, but use a house in their own way. Rats are curious climbers and often use a house as part of their route through the enclosure. Guinea pigs, on the other hand, prefer to seek out sheltered spots where they can sit quietly, eat, or relax.
The Trixie Tilde House beautifully combines these functions. The interior offers shelter, while the roof forms an extra soft spot. For rats, that roof can become a favorite resting place. For guinea pigs, usage depends on the animal and the interior; some guinea pigs like to climb on it, while others mainly use the interior.
Thanks to the open bottom, the house stands directly on the bedding. This feels more natural and makes it easier to place the house into an existing interior.
For mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, this house is very large and less logical as a standard house. For rabbits, the house is too small as a proper hiding place. For chinchillas and degus, the soft cushion is less practical, as these animals may actively gnaw on fabric and soft materials.
Place the Tilde House low and stable in the enclosure or in a safe run. Ensure that the house cannot tilt, slide, or sag when your animal walks inside, pushes against it, or sits on the roof.
Use the roof only as it naturally forms part of the enclosure: as a low relaxation or resting spot. Do not turn it into a high step or a tripping hazard. For rats, the house can be a nice addition to a low route with platforms, tunnels, and hammocks. For guinea pigs, the house often works best in a quiet corner with plenty of room to move around it.
Check the removable cushion regularly. Is it being chewed on, are loose threads coming loose, or is the filling becoming visible? If so, remove the cushion and use the house without the soft roof lining.
The roof of Huisje Tilde is covered with a soft faux sheepskin cushion. This makes the roof extra comfortable as a relaxation spot. The cushion is removable and can be hand-washed, which is handy when hair, hay, or dirt gets on it.
Allow the cushion to dry completely after washing before putting it back. Do not use the cushion if it is wet, damaged, or frayed. Extra monitoring is important for animals that like to chew on fabric.
The wooden house has a natural bark wood look. This pairs beautifully with bedding, hay, wooden tunnels, cork, and other natural furnishings. Because wood and bark are natural materials, color, texture, and finish may vary slightly from house to house.
With bark wood, it is possible that some bark may peel off in certain places. This is part of the natural character of the material. However, do check regularly to ensure that no sharp or loose parts develop.

No, with this type of wood, you do not need to worry about that. The softwood species used contain no resin canals and are dried for a long period. The glue used is also non-toxic to animals and consists of a mixture of cellulose.
This makes the little house suitable as wooden furnishings for rats and guinea pigs, provided you keep the product dry, place it stably, and check regularly for wear.
Preferably clean the wooden part dry with a brush or cloth. Shake out loose bedding, hay, and leftover feed. Use a slightly damp cloth only when necessary and allow the wood to dry completely before replacing it.
You can remove the cushion from the canopy and wash it by hand. Let it dry thoroughly afterwards. Check the cushion for loose threads, wear, chew marks, and visible filling. Do not use the cushion if it is damaged.
Also regularly check the wood for gnaw marks, sharp edges, loose bark, and cracks. Replace the house when it is no longer sturdy or pleasant to use.
