Sunflower seeds with the shell are a tasty and natural snack for small rodents. Mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, pygmy rats, and rats, in particular, enjoy eating them. They grab the seed, gnaw open the shell, and then eat the kernel. This makes the snack not only delicious but also provides a little foraging opportunity.
At DRD, when it comes to seeds and kernels, we focus primarily on how your animal can engage with them. These sunflower seeds still have their shells, giving small rodents something to do before they reach the seed. You can feed them by hand, hide them in the enclosure, or use them during training and habituation.
✔ Natural snack with shell for small rodents.
✔ Stimulates searching, holding, nibbling open, and foraging.
✔ Nice as a small reward during taming or training.
✔ Fun to hide in bedding, sniffing material, or foraging toys.
✔ Large 600-gram package, handy when you have multiple small rodents.
✔ Can be consciously portioned as an extra snack alongside your daily diet.
Small rodents love using their paws to grasp food. A sunflower seed with the shell fits perfectly with this. Your pet must first hold, twist, and nibble open the seed before the kernel can be eaten. This prolongs the snack time and keeps your pet more actively involved in the eating process.
For hamsters, dwarf hamsters, mice, and gerbils, sunflower seeds are especially fun as a small reward or as part of a foraging session. You can scatter a few seeds through the bedding, hide them in a sniffing spot, or use them to gently get your animal used to your hand.
Rats and pygmy rats can also make good use of shelled sunflower seeds as a small reward. They are skillful with their paws and often enjoy opening the seed themselves. Use them, for example, during training, in a foraging bowl, or as a small treat held by hand.
For guinea pigs and rabbits, sunflower seeds with the shell make less sense. They cannot open the shell as skillfully with their paws as small rodents do. For guinea pigs and rabbits, it is better to choose snacks that suit their own eating habits, such as herbs, leaves, flowers, or vegetable snacks.
For chinchillas and degus, sunflower seeds are too high in energy as a snack. For these animals, it is better to choose suitable herbs, leaves, hay, and species-specific snacks that better meet their sensitive nutritional needs.
Give sunflower seeds consciously and in small quantities. They are nutritious seeds primarily intended as an extra snack, not as a main food. A few seeds at a time is often enough to give your pet a nice snack moment.
You can offer sunflower seeds in various ways:
Pay close attention to the total amount of snacks your pet receives. Especially with small animals, a snack can quickly add up. Therefore, use sunflower seeds as a treat in addition to the daily basic food.
Sunflower seeds with the shell are very suitable for stimulating foraging. Because they are small and have a distinct scent, you can easily hide them. Your animal then has to search, smell, and work to find the seed and open it.
For hamsters and gerbils, you can scatter a few seeds through a deep layer of bedding. For mice, a sniffing spot or small foraging tray works well. For rats, you can use the seeds in a treat ball, egg carton, cardboard puzzle, or foraging mat. This way, you turn a small snack into an instant enrichment moment.
Composition: 100% sunflower seeds with shells.
Analysis: not specified.
Sunflower seeds are naturally nutritious seeds. That is precisely why they make a nice small treat, but do not give them in unlimited quantities. The shell makes them particularly interesting for small rodents who like to hold, open, and eat something.
This snack is primarily intended for small rodents that can hold sunflower seeds with their paws and nibble them open. For guinea pigs and rabbits, it is better to choose a snack without a hard shell that suits their eating habits better. Sunflower seeds are less suitable for chinchillas and degus due to their high-energy nature.
Store the sunflower seeds in a cool, dry, and tightly sealed place. This will keep them fresh and appealing for longer. Preferably use a sealable storage container once the packaging is opened.
Always give snacks alongside a good basic diet suitable for the animal species. Sunflower seeds are a nice extra, but they do not replace complete food, hay where necessary, or other daily care.
