Product description

Nail-Free Long Corner Platform for Rodents

The Long Corner Platform is a spacious wooden platform for rodents who like to sit a bit higher, maintain an overview, or use an extra resting spot in their enclosure. Thanks to its elongated shape, this platform offers more lying and sitting space than a small standard corner platform, while being neatly mounted in a corner of the cage. This allows you to make smart use of the height of the enclosure without losing unnecessary floor space.

The platform is made of 100% untreated spruce wood and is nail-free. You can easily attach it to the bars using the included mounting materials. This makes the platform particularly suitable for wire cages and enclosures with sturdy attachment points. For animals such as rats, dwarf rats, chinchillas, and degus, a platform can greatly enhance the enclosure's decor, as they enjoy climbing, sitting, observing, and utilizing different levels.

Why choose a long corner shelf?

A platform not only makes an enclosure feel larger but also makes it more interesting to use. Animals gain an extra place to sit, rest, look around, or change routes. Especially for animals that enjoy climbing and using multiple levels, a platform can help to better organize the cage.

When it comes to platforms, DRD primarily looks at three things: is the platform suitable for the animal species, is the mounting logical, and is the height used safely? This long corner platform is particularly nice for animals that really benefit from extra levels, such as rats, dwarf rats, chinchillas, and degus. For smaller animals, it is only possible if the cage and placement are suitable.

Nail-free and made of untreated spruce

The platform is nail-free and made of untreated spruce wood. This makes it a calm, natural choice for furnishing a rodent cage. Wood provides grip for the paws and blends well with other natural materials such as tunnels, ladders, hammocks, ropes, and hiding places.

Because wood is a natural material, it can wear down due to gnawing, urine, or heavy use. Therefore, check the platform regularly and replace it when it is gnawed too far, becomes unstable, or develops sharp edges.

For which animals is the Long Corner Platform suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable for a wire cage or aviary setup with safe height differences. For mice, the platform is spacious and particularly interesting as an extra route or group spot.
  • Dwarf hamster: only suitable if the platform can be placed low and safely. Many dwarf hamsters live in terrariums without bars; in that case, attachment is not logical, and low platforms or natural elevations are often more suitable.
  • Hamster: only suitable with a suitable wire cage and low, safe placement. Avoid high points of impact, as hamsters are not true height climbers.
  • Gerbil: limited suitability. Gerbils often live in deep burrows or terrariums, making a hanging wire platform not always practical. Use it only if it can be securely and lowly mounted.
  • Dwarf rat: suitable as a resting and lookout spot in a wire cage. Dwarf rats can vary in size, so choose the size based on build and group use.
  • Rat: very suitable as an extra sitting, resting, and lookout spot. Rats like to use multiple levels and can comfortably use a long platform to sit or lie down together.
  • Guinea pig: not suitable as a standard platform. Guinea pigs are not climbers and primarily need floor space, spacious hiding places, and low, easily accessible furnishings.
  • Rabbit: not suitable. Rabbits need larger, sturdier platforms or raised areas that suit their size and movement.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a perch and jumping platform in a suitable chinchilla cage. Place multiple platforms so that jumps remain logical and safe.
  • Degu: suitable as an extra level, perch, or route in the cage. Degus enjoy using sturdy platforms and clear pathways.

How do you use the platform in the cage?

Securely attach the platform to the bars using the supplied mounting materials. After securing it, check that the platform does not wobble, slide, or bend. Preferably, position the platform so that your animal can easily get on and off it via another platform, a ladder, a branch, or a safe route.

For rats, chinchillas, and degus, you can combine multiple levels to create a pleasant route through the cage. For hamsters and gerbils, however, you must pay extra attention to fall height and stability. Place the platform low and do not use it as a high climbing structure.

Usage Practical tip
Resting place If necessary, place a suitable small cushion, mat, or piece of fleece on it if that suits the animal species.
Lookout point Place the platform in a spot where your animal has a good view, but does not have to jump too high or unsafely.
Route in the cage Combine with ladders, tunnels, branches, or other platforms for a logical walking route.
Ratscaping Use the platform as an extra layer in a natural rat setup with tunnels, hammocks, and foraging areas.

Which size do you choose?

The Long Corner Platform is available in approx. 30 × 15 cm and 40 × 20 cm. Which size fits best depends on the animal species, the cage, the number of animals, and the location where you want to hang the platform.

  • 30 × 15 cm: handy as an extra perch, small resting place, or intermediate platform in a compact cage.
  • 40 × 20 cm: more spacious and pleasant when the plateau is actually used as a lounge area or group space.

For rats, chinchillas, and degus, the larger size is often more interesting if the cage has room for it. For small animals, safe placement is especially more important than a large platform.

Fastening and stability

The platform is attached to the bars. Check beforehand whether the bar spacing, bar thickness, and cage wall are suitable for the mounting materials. Tighten the fasteners firmly, but do not force anything. After installation, check that the platform hangs straight and does not tilt when you apply light pressure to it.

Does your cage have thin bars or is the bar spacing different? Then the washers or fasteners might fit slightly differently. Therefore, always check the stability before offering the platform to your animals.

Cleaning and maintenance

You can clean untreated wood with a dry brush or a slightly damp cloth. Allow the tray to dry thoroughly before replacing it. Because wood can absorb moisture, it is advisable to remove urine stains quickly and not leave the tray wet for extended periods.

If the platform is used intensively as a toilet area or becomes heavily soiled, replacing it is often more hygienic than continuing to clean it. Also, check regularly for the development of sharp gnawing edges or loose parts.

Material and specifications

Material: 100% untreated spruce wood.

Construction: nail-free.

Dimensions: approx. 30 × 15 cm and 40 × 20 cm.

Mounting: to bars with the supplied mounting materials.

Use: extra seating area, resting place, lookout point, route, or cage level.

Good to know

Offer the platform only if it can be securely and stably attached. Check regularly for wear, gnawing damage, and dirt. Remove the platform if it becomes unstable, develops sharp edges, or can no longer be kept clean.

Always use platforms species-appropriately. For climbing animals such as rats, chinchillas, and degus, a platform can be very beneficial. For animals that do not handle heights well, such as hamsters, low and safe placement is more important than height.
