Gerbil bedding selection guide – choose diggable, dust-free and tunnel-proof
The "best" substrate for gerbils is primarily: diggable, dust-free, and preferably buildable (tunnels remain standing). In this selection guide, we'll help you choose and mix, so your gerbils can truly do what they were made for: digging, dragging, and nesting. DRD Rodent Shop® has been a specialist since 2011.

Checklist – Ground cover that really works
- ✓ Digging : Gerbils must be able to dig tunnels.
- ✓ Low dust : pleasant for the nose/eyes and easier in the home.
- ✓ Buildable : preferably mixable so that tunnels remain upright better.
- ✓ Combine with nesting material for comfort in the nest chamber.
What requirements should good ground cover meet?
Good gerbil bedding supports digging and remains pleasant to use. Note: the looser the material, the faster tunnels collapse. Therefore, a single species is often less effective than a clever combination.
Mixes for sturdy tunnels (practical)
A working approach is: comfort + structure . Comfort adds volume and softness, while structure helps the tunnels stay in place. Build in layers, pressing the base layer lightly.
Tip (safety):
- ✓ Place heavy houses on a stable surface/plateau, not “loose” in the excavation layer.
- ✓ Create one extra deep zone (slope) for the real tunnel builders.
How deep do you lay it?
Rule of thumb: as deep as possible within your enclosure. Many keepers use a deep burrowing area so gerbils can create proper tunnels. Don't have a super-deep enclosure (yet)? Start with a slope: shallower at the front, deeper at the back.
Maintenance without stress
- ✓ Daily: remove wet spots and food residues.
- ✓ Weekly: refresh locally (not all at once).
- ✓ Periodic: larger changes in phases, so that their scent/safety remains.

FAQ – Gerbil Bedding
Why is mixing often better?
Because you combine comfort and structure: softer material + “building” material = more stable tunnels.
Do I also need to provide nesting material?
Yes, gerbils like to line their nest chambers. Choose soft, safe nesting material and provide it in portions.
