Rat lovers know it: good bedding makes all the difference in comfort, hygiene, and how fresh your cage stays. Pet rats are active, intelligent, and often love to rummage around in the bedding (especially around feeding areas and toilet areas). In this category, you'll find rat bedding that meets their needs: dust-reducing, absorbent, and easy to use.
At DRD Rodent Shop® , you can choose from bedding that works well in rat cages and rat enclosures. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011.

Choosing Rat Bedding – Quick Selection Guide
Want to get comfortable quickly? Start with a dust-free, absorbent base (e.g., paper/cardboard or another dust-free material) and then create a separate toilet area . This keeps the area fresher for longer and keeps the floor tidy.
1) Paper & cardboard (very popular with rat owners)
- Relatively low-dust, gentle on paws and often highly absorbent.
- Useful in cages with deep trays or base plates.
2) Natural fibers (e.g. hemp/flax/wood fiber – depending on your cage)
- Great if you want a slightly “airier” soil with good moisture absorption.
- Pay extra attention to dust formation when pouring and refreshing the water: working calmly helps.
3) Enrichment (optional): play corner or digging bucket
- Create a separate box/corner with “play bedding” for sniffing and messing around.
Tip : Combine litter mats with pee pads on levels for quick cleaning of favorite pee spots.
What types of ground cover can you find in this category?
Rat enclosures generally serve three roles for bedding: absorption , comfort , and practical hygiene . That's why you'll find options like paper/cardboard bedding, natural fiber bedding, and materials that are useful for a separate toilet or play area. Which one works best depends on your cage (depth/slats), how you clean it, and how vigorously your rats dig.
Layer thickness & layout: this is how your cage stays fresh for longer
- Base substrate: Cover the substrate evenly, especially in areas where rats frequently walk and eat.
- Toilet area: choose 1–2 fixed corners with a toilet tray and/or a litter box that you can easily change daily.
- Levels & plateaus: use mats or loose pads on favorite pee spots (saves ammonia smell and cleaning).
Convenient combination: toilets , urinals and care & cleaning together ensure the greatest "fresh effect".
Maintenance & hygiene – how to prevent wet spots and odors
✔ Remove wet spots and soiled corners daily (especially around the toilet and food).
✔ Refresh the toilet area more often than the rest of the floor.
✔ Clean platforms and levels regularly (where “permanent” puddles often occur).
✔ Work quietly when changing the airflow to reduce dust swirling.
Safety
Preferably choose low-dust bedding and ensure good ventilation in the enclosure. Avoid strong-smelling or dusty materials, and be careful with materials that quickly produce a large number of fine particles. If you notice sneezing, shortness of breath, or any noticeable changes in condition, consult a veterinarian.

FAQ – rat bedding
What is the best substrate for pet rats?
That depends on your cage and routine. Many rat owners choose a dust-free base (e.g., paper/cardboard or another dust-free material) and create a separate toilet area that you clean more frequently.
How often should I change the bedding?
Removing wet spots daily works best. The amount of time required to completely change the substrate varies depending on the cage, group size, and cage. Creating a toilet area often allows you to use the basic substrate longer.
Can I use hay or sawdust as bedding for rats?
Be careful with this: some varieties can be dusty or strongly scented. Use hay as enrichment/feed (e.g., in a manger) and preferably choose a low-dust bedding suitable for rats.
My rats are mixing everything up – what can help?
That's typical for rats. A deep litter box, a designated litter box, and level mats often help the most. Also check out rat cages and platforms & ladders .
