Degus are real go-getters: active during the day, curious, and fond of digging , pushing , and building . Good bedding for degus is therefore not an afterthought, but the foundation of a comfortable habitat. Set up your cage or terrarium to allow for a deep, diggable layer (preferably 20+ cm – the thicker, the better), perhaps with a separate digging tray. For the "pee corner," you can choose extra absorbent bedding or a mat as a base. Layer upon layer: how to create a degu-proof digging bottom
A practical approach is to work with zones and layers: (1) absorbent substrate (e.g., hemp/flax/wood fiber), (2) a thick digging layer (paper bedding, card bedding, or mix), and (3) a "toilet zone" where you can change the litter more quickly. Mixing (e.g., paper + card) often creates an airy structure that degus like to move and "sculpt." If you use a digging box, you can maximize the depth there without having to fill the entire cage to the brim.
Which type of ground cover suits your routine?
If you're looking for lots of digging fun , choose paper bedding or a mix with cardbed. For practical maintenance and a firmer structure, combine it with hemp/flax or an absorbent underlay. For extra "floor comfort" or to target specific areas, you can also use a mat , such as a hemp mat or bath mat . Tip: don't make it too "hard" or too "loose"; degus appreciate being able to dig and move the material.
How do you use this?
✔ Start with an absorbent underlay (optional, but often useful).
✔ Then make a deep digging layer (preferably 20+ cm) with diggable litter or a mix.
✔ Choose one corner as the “pee corner” and change the diaper there more often (saves work).
✔ Remove visible dirt daily and fill in where degus make holes.
✔ Change the litter completely when it is clearly soiled or feels less fresh.

FAQ
How thick should the substrate be for degus?
Aim for a deep digging layer (preferably 20 cm or more). If that doesn't work in the entire cage, use a digging bucket with extra depth.
What is useful if my degus mainly pee in one corner?
Make it a permanent pee area with extra absorbent litter or a mat as a base, so you can change the litter more quickly without replacing everything.
Which mix often works best for graves?
