When it comes to good coat care, a sandbox is highly recommended for some rodents. A sandbox can be used for mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas and degus. Gerbils and Chinchillas really need this to keep their coat in good condition. If these animals were not given a sandbox, serious problems with their coat and skin could arise.

Besides the fact that these animals love rolling in the sand, the sand has other functions. Sand also has an abrasive and cooling effect. In the wild, these rodents bathe in sand to groom their fur and to get rid of any parasites. Because sand has a degreasing effect, it provides ventilation between the hair and therefore cooling.

Not every type of sand is suitable for bathing. Only soft chinchilla sand can be used for this. Other types of sand are either too coarse or too sharp.

NB! Never use shell sand in the sandbox. This sand is too sharp for the hamster's skin.

Special digging buckets are available for rabbits. These are made of decent quality wood and are suitable as a digging/play box for rabbits. For anyone who has ever let their rabbits run in the garden, it will no longer be a secret that rabbits really love digging. By giving them a sandbox they can continue to exhibit this natural behavior without the garden being ploughed.
