Which animals are cushions & baskets suitable for?
- Rabbits and guinea pigs: they love to lie down on a fat bed or cushion. A dry, clean place to lie down is especially important.
- Rats: True comfort seekers; many rats like to use caves, sleeping bags, and soft tunnels as permanent sleeping spots.
- Mice: like to nest in igloos or a cozy basket as an extra hiding place.
Be careful with hamsters (and other "nibblers"): some animals pull on fabric or use soft objects as nesting material. This can be fine, but in that case, check extra carefully for frayed edges, loose threads, and gnawing damage.
Checklist: How to choose the right soft resting place
- Size: your pet should be able to lie down comfortably (better a little more spacious than too small).
- Type: Open lying area (pillow/fat bed) or sheltered (cave/igloo/sleeping bag) – observe behaviour.
- Surface: Lay down softly, preferably in a stable, dry place (not in a “wet corner”).
- Washability: Check the label; an extra set to rotate is often useful.
- Nibbling/wear: if there are bite marks or fraying, replace rather than continue using.
Hygiene & maintenance
Soft products stay most comfortable when they're clean and dry. Check daily for wet spots and soiling. Vetbeds and (molton) pee mats are popular because they're easy to care for. Always follow the care label and let items dry thoroughly before putting them back.
Safety
- Check for fraying/loose threads: replace if damaged.
- Not too warm: In warm periods, fleece/plush can be too warm; always provide a cooler alternative in the enclosure.
- Pay attention to gnawing behaviour: if necessary, offer additional gnawing material to control the need to gnaw.
FAQ Cushions & Baskets
What is the difference between a fat bed and a pillow?
A fat bed is often practical and sturdy as a sleeping mat (especially for guinea pigs/rabbits). A cushion is more of a "lounge" option and is often used for extra comfort.
My pet pees on soft objects, what is the best solution?
In that case, it is better to choose fat beds/(molton) pee mats and make sure that you can change and wash them.
My pet nibbles on fabric, what now?
Check for damage and offer additional gnawing material. If the demolition or dust-eating persists, choose a different resting spot.
