Rat toilets – cleanliness, less odor and faster cleaning in the rat cage

Domestic rat with toilet – toilet training helps with hygiene and less odor A rat toilet is one of the most practical upgrades for your enclosure. Rats are smart, social animals and often choose a designated "toilet area." With the right toilet (and the right litter), you can make that area clear, resulting in less litter waste, faster spot cleaning, and a cleaner cage.

In this category, you'll find not only corner and straight toilets (including larger models), but also handy additions like litter, pee stones, and cleaning tools. This makes potty training achievable and maintenance easier. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011.

Smart toilet corner
Place the toilet in the spot where your rats already have their teeth. If you have multiple floors, use multiple toilets.

The right filling
A separate toilet filling (or firm granules) makes the difference: better absorbent and clearer for training.

Hygiene without hassle
Spot-clean + the right cleaning tackles urine odor and keeps plastic toilets fresh for longer.

Choosing a rat toilet – quick selection guide

The "best" toilet is the one your rats will actually use. Therefore, choose based on location (corner or straight), size (group size), and cage layout (multiple levels).

1) Corner toilet (most popular)

  • Ideal if your rats use one fixed corner.
  • Useful when space is limited on the bottom of the cage.

2) Straight toilet / “kitty” style (more spacious)

  • Convenient for larger groups or if the toilet corner is used “widely”.
  • Often works well in a fixed spot on the floor or a spacious platform.

3) Multiple floors?

  • Place at least one toilet on each floor (rats like to choose the closest spot).
  • Combine with platforms and ladders to ensure toilets are safe and stable.

Success tip: start with a toilet on the “favorite” corner, and then add extra toilets where needed.

What types of rat toilets can you find here?

Here you will find toilets and practical additions that really make cleaning the cage easier:

  • Corner toilets – compact and logical for the “toilet corner”.
  • Straight toilets – more spacious, convenient for groups and wide toilet routes.
  • Large toilets with a rim – extra space, less “over the edge”.
  • Toilet filling – specially designed for absorption and odor control.
  • Pee stones – a popular aid in toilet training.
  • Scoops/sieve scoops – for quick mucking out and spot cleaning.

How to potty train rats – here's how to do it smartly

Toilet training is all about logic and repetition . Make the toilet more appealing than "the rest of the cage":

  • Observe where your rats are already urinating/defecating (usually one fixed corner).
  • Place the toilet exactly where it is – rats are efficient and choose the shortest route.
  • For the first few days, place any droppings that lie next to it in the toilet (smell signal = “this is where it belongs”).
  • For multiple floors: installing more toilets increases the chance of success.
  • If necessary, use a pee stone as an "anchor" in/next to the toilet.

Which filling is suitable for the rat toilet?

For a toilet corner, a filling that absorbs well and retains odors works best. Special toilet fillings are often used, but firm granules can also work very well.

  • Toilet filler – designed to better retain urine and odors (useful for daily spot cleaning).
  • Firm granules – for example Cotton N Pellets as toilet filling.
  • Training tip: Initially use a different litter in the toilet than in the rest of the cage (difference = clearer).

Combine this with a low-dust base substrate? Also check out rat bedding .

Maintenance & hygiene – keeping the toilet area fresh

Rats mark; that's normal. A simple routine will prevent the toilet area from leaking into the rest of the cage:

Spot-clean daily: remove wet clumps/filling, replace with fresh filling.
Wash the toilet regularly with warm water and a mild detergent; rinse well and dry.
For urine odor on plastic/surface, you can clean in a targeted manner with CSI Urine Spray (enzyme-based).
Need extra help? Combine the toilet and urinal with pee pads in high-risk areas.

Checklist – Rat Toilets That “Knock”

Toilet is placed in the spot where your rats already choose (corner = success)
Large enough for your group (better spacious than too small)
Multiple toilets on multiple floors (close by = used)
Separate toilet filling or firm granules for clear distinction and absorption
Hygiene routine: spot clean daily, full cleaning regularly

Safety

Check toilets regularly for cracks and sharp edges. Place toilets securely (especially on platforms) so they can't slide or fall. Always use cleaning products according to the directions, rinse thoroughly, and let everything dry completely. Scented (deodorizing) products should be used sparingly and never directly in the nesting area.

FAQ – rat toilets

Are rats toilet trained?
Many rats naturally choose one specific spot. By placing a litter box in that location (and clearly varying the litter) you increase the likelihood that they'll use it consistently.

How many toilets do I need?
At least one. For multiple floors or larger groups, multiple toilets often work better, because rats will choose the nearest option.

Which filling is best?
Litter is designed for absorption and odor control. A firm pellet like Cotton N Pellets also works very well. Initially, it's best to use a different litter than the rest of the cage.

Does a urinal really help?
For many rats, it serves as a "regular pee spot." It can be especially useful as an additional tool during training or when introducing a new toilet area.
