Which animals are snacks suitable for?

Snacks are usually suitable, but the right type varies from animal to animal. A helpful rule of thumb: herbivores (such as rabbits and guinea pigs) primarily choose herb/vegetable-like snacks, while omnivores (such as hamsters, mice, gerbils, and rats) can also often have seeds/kernels or treats (always in moderation and appropriate for the animal).

Dosage & routine: how to keep snacks truly "responsible"

  • Snacks are a supplement , not a staple. Keep portions small.
  • Use snacks wisely : as a reward, training or to encourage foraging.
  • Variety works : swap herbs/vegetables with interactive snacks for an extra challenge.
  • Pay attention to energy-rich snacks such as nuts and (dried) fruit: they are extra tasty, so give them in moderation.

Checklist: Choosing the right snack

  • Animal species: herbivore or granivore/omnivore? Choose your snack type there.
  • Goal: reward, foraging, interactive/puzzle or “something extra”.
  • Composition: with us you consciously choose sweets/cookies: no added sugars.
  • Portion: keep small, especially with nuts and (dried) fruit.
  • Frequency: Better to have a mini-portion more often than “too much” every now and then.

Safety

  • Introduce new things slowly (especially if you have a sensitive gut): start small and see how it goes.
  • Remove any wet snacks (prevents mold and dirty spots in the enclosure).
  • Please note species suitability : not every snack is suitable for every animal (we indicate this on the product pages).
  • When in doubt: choose dried vegetables/herbs or ask us for advice.
