What will you find here?
- Brushes, combs and de-shedding tools for different coat types.
- Grooming scissors and tools to keep the coat neat (for example around the hindquarters/legs).
- Skin and coat care products for small animals (always follow the product description).
- Mild cleaning such as wipes or tools to clean dirty spots.
Selection aid per animal
- Rabbits: Molting and coat control are important; for long-haired rabbits, more frequent combing and trimming around sensitive areas as needed helps.
- Guinea pigs: Long-haired breeds especially benefit from regular combing; also check their hindquarters for dirty spots.
- Rats: Many rats enjoy a gentle brushing; watch for skin irritation and stay calm.
- Hamsters, mice, and gerbils: a quick check is usually sufficient; choose small, soft tools and work stress-free.
- Chinchillas and degus: Coat care often involves sand baths; see also Chinchilla sand .
Moulting & long hair: how to approach it effectively
- Choose a brush/comb that suits the coat: soft for fine hair, firmer for thick undercoat or long hair.
- Work in short sessions and reward calmly (especially with animals that do not like to sit still).
- For tangles: work them out gently rather than pulling; only cut when absolutely necessary and with suitable tools.
- If you see a lot of dandruff, bald spots, or wounds, it's wise to have your dog checked by a veterinarian.
Cleaning: when to clean and when not to clean
A coat doesn't need to be washed "on a schedule." Spot cleaning (for example, a sticky spot or sticky poop) is usually sufficient. Use products as directed on the label and let the coat dry thoroughly before returning your pet to a cool enclosure.
For a fresh base in the accommodation, you can combine with Hygienic Clean .
Checklist: quickly make the right choice
- Select by animal species and coat type (short-haired, long-haired, undercoat, curly).
- For tangles: start by gently detangling, then brush.
- For dirty spots: choose a mild local cleanser and do not repeat it too often.
- Combine with nail check: Nail care .
- In case of obvious skin problems or rapid deterioration: have a veterinarian examine the animal.
Hygiene & maintenance
- Clean brushes and combs regularly (remove hair, clean according to product information) and let them dry thoroughly.
- Clean wet areas in the enclosure daily; this prevents dirty fur and sticky poop.
- Replace accessories that are no longer cleanable.
Safe use
- Read the label: animal species suitability, application and dosage are leading.
- Work calmly and support the animal well; stopping is always better than "continuing" when stressed.
- Only use products as intended and do not combine resources without good reason.
- In case of wounds, severe itching, bald spots or doubt: veterinary advice is the safest step.
FAQ Skin & Coat Care
How often should I brush?
This varies by animal and coat type. Shorthairs often only need occasional grooming, while longhairs and shedding seasons often require shorter sessions.
My rabbit/guinea pig has tangles. What now?
Gently loosen tangles using a suitable comb/brush. Large, tight tangles may require touch-ups; do this gently and safely.
Are wipes useful for dirty spots?
Yes, especially for spot cleaning. Use them as directed and avoid unnecessary cleaning.
When do I call a veterinarian?
In case of wounds, clear skin irritation, severe itching, bald spots, lethargy or if your animal eats/drinks less.
