Rabbit litter & litter: dry, fresh and clean
Good litter is important for both hygiene and potty training. Rabbits are naturally clean animals and often avoid dirty litter boxes. With the right litter, the litter box stays dry longer, smells less quickly, and your rabbit will continue to enjoy using the litter box.
Why use a separate toilet filling?
Not every substrate is suitable as a litter box. Litter should be highly absorbent and dust-free , so urine is quickly absorbed and the litter box remains comfortable. Preferably use a different litter in the litter box than in the rest of the enclosure: this makes the distinction between "lying area" and "toilet area" clearer for your rabbit.
Which toilet litter is suitable for rabbits?
A good rabbit litter is:
- Absorbent (absorbs urine quickly)
- Low dust (good for sensitive airways)
- Odour-binding (less strong ammonia odour)
- Practical (stays in the toilet as much as possible and is easy to change)
How to keep the rabbit toilet attractive
Scoop out wet spots and droppings regularly and change the litter on time. Place the litter box in a spot where your rabbit naturally likes to pee. Extra tip: hang a hay rack above the litter box – many rabbits eat and poop at the same time, making the litter box a more common spot.
