Why are Rats Granivores?
Rats belong to the granivores, just like mice, hamsters and gerbils. However, the diet of all these animals differs considerably from each other. What all these animals have in common with the herbivores such as guinea pigs and rabbits are the herbs that they occasionally eat for medicinal purposes. In the wild, animals have to fend for themselves, they have developed an excellent botany for this.
Can Herbs Be Fed to Rats?
Herbs have their own purpose of use. One herb has a calming effect, another promotes digestion and yet another works as an expectorant. For Rats, there is one type of herb in particular that stands out above the others: thyme. Thyme has been used for the respiratory tract since ancient times. It works as an expectorant and makes it possible to breathe freely.
Which herbs your Rats like depends largely on their individual needs. If you really want to find out which ones they like, it is advisable to try several different herbs. Give the animals a little bit of each herb each time and see how they react to it.
If the animals show certain ailments, you can tailor the herb to the ailment.
