Gerbil Decor Selection Guide – Houses, Tunnels, Rodent Material, and Foraging | DRD Rodent Shop®

Gerbil decor selection guide – cleverly combine houses, tunnels, gnawing materials and foraging

Gerbil furnishing and enrichment selection aid The best design isn't "as much stuff as possible," but rather a setup that allows gerbils safe movement and stimulates their behavior: hiding, digging, gnawing, destroying, and foraging. This selection guide explains how to create a logical "route plan" with the right products. DRD Rodent Shop® has been a specialist since 2011.

Checklist – design that “works”

  • At least 1 large house + additional shelters along routes.
  • Combine above and below ground tunnels .
  • Always gnawing material available (safe and untreated).
  • Daily foraging stimulus : searching/working for food.
  • Check for wear and instability weekly.

The basics: hiding places and routes

Gerbils feel safer when they can move in stages: from hiding place to hiding place. That's why a setup with multiple houses, tunnels, and route elements is often more peaceful than one large open space.

Tunnels: above and below ground

Tunnels perfectly complement their behavior. Underground routes (in the excavation layer) and above-ground tunnels (cork, terracotta, seagrass) can be combined.

Rodent material: not an extra, but basic

Gerbils have continuously growing teeth and therefore a natural need to gnaw. Always offer suitable gnawing material and replace it when it becomes soiled or worn.

Foraging & Toys: Smarter Than “More Snacks”

Foraging offers mental challenges. Think of sniffing and searching items, "demolition" materials, and games that require them to work for food.

Running wheel: when and what should you pay attention to?

Many gerbils love to run. Choose a wheel with a closed running surface and a size that allows their backs to remain straight. Make sure the wheel is stable and prevent bedding from falling into it.

FAQ – Gerbil furnishing selection guide

How many houses do I need?

At least one large house and additional shelters along the routes. More choice often provides peace of mind (especially with multiple animals).

What is the best enrichment?

Foraging is great: searching/working for food. Combine that with gnawing and demolition material.
