Rat toilet training – cage toilet training (information page)

Many rats naturally choose a fixed spot to urinate and defecate. This makes them ideal for practical toilet training in their cage. On this information page, we explain how to potty train rats, which litter is useful, how to manage multiple levels, and how to keep the cage fresh with a clever routine.

Place the toilet on the "fixed corner"

Observe where they are already peeing/pooping and place the toilet there: rat toilets .

Make “toilet filling” different from the base

A clear difference in texture/smell helps. Combine with a suitable, dust-free base: bedding .

Work with “quick cleaning” zones

On platforms and favorite pee spots, pee mats help keep litter fresh without having to replace everything all the time.

Basic principle: rats learn through smell and ease

Rats are smart and often a bit lazy: they choose the shortest, most logical route. Toilet training therefore works best when: (1) the toilet is in the right place , (2) the toilet is easily accessible , and (3) you "mark" the toilet with a little scent recognition (droppings/urine in the litter box).

Step-by-step plan for toilet training rats (practical and feasible)

  1. Observe for 2–3 days where the pee/poo corner is (often one fixed corner).
  2. Place the toilet exactly where they need it and make sure they can get in and out easily.
  3. Place droppings in the toilet (and if necessary, dab a small amount of urine into the filling) so that the message is clear: "this is where it belongs."
  4. Make mistakes "boring" : consistently move droppings next to the toilet to the toilet. Don't punish; just repeat.
  5. Multiple floors? Place at least one toilet per floor, as rats like to choose the nearest option.
  6. Be realistic : 100% house-training is not achievable with every rat/group (marking can continue), but you will often gain a lot in terms of hygiene and less odor.

Filling & material: what usually works best?

  • Toilet filling : preferably choose a filling that is absorbent and not strongly perfumed.
  • Avoid clumping/very dusty or strongly perfumed varieties.
  • Floor : Work with a dust-free base and a clear toilet area. This keeps the cage neater and fresher.

Conveniently combine: Toilets · Ground covering · Cage accessories

Maintenance & hygiene: how to keep it fresh (without excessive "stripping")

  • Daily : Remove wet spots, remove spoiled food scraps, and check the toilet.
  • Litter box : If your rats use it, replace the contents regularly (preferably daily or every other day, depending on the group/size).
  • Textiles/Shelves : Use pee pads in favorite spots and wash/change them routinely: pee pads .
  • Ventilation helps: a fresh cage is also a matter of air quality and not too “wet” floors.

Checklist: More toilet-trained housing for rats

Quick check:

Toilet is located at the fixed "pee/poo" corner
Poop next to the toilet consistently goes back into the toilet
A toilet per floor (with multiple levels)
Toilet filling is different from the floor covering
Plasma mat(s) on favorite spots/platforms
Regular cleaning routine (spot clean + periodic cleaning)

Safety warnings

  • Choose a filling that is not strongly scented or extremely dusty (airways are important).
  • Make the toilet easily accessible (no high entry for young/old rats).
  • Hygiene: Wash your hands after cleaning and work quietly to reduce dust.
  • In case of sudden change in stool/urine, lethargy or shortness of breath: contact a veterinarian.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Litter Training Rats

Can rats really be toilet trained?
Many rats learn to use a fixed spot, especially if you place the toilet at the right angle and consistently place droppings in the toilet.

How many toilets do I need?
Start with at least one. In a multi-level cage , multiple toilets often work much better.

Why do some rats continue to “mark”?
Marking is part of rat behavior and can (partially) remain, especially on favorite routes/plateaus. Toilets and pee mats make it quickly and hygienically manageable.

Which categories help the most?
Toilets , pee mats and bedding are the “basic three” for a fresher cage.
