Checklist: how to quickly choose the right house
- Size: Your pet should be able to turn comfortably and lie down at full length.
- Entrances: when living together or with larger species, multiple entrances are often more pleasant (less of a 'cramped' feeling).
- Material: Rodents gnaw. Choose a material that suits their behavior and check it regularly for wear and tear.
- Maintenance: consider cleaning (smooth materials are often easier; wood requires more frequent spot cleaning).
- Placement: Place the house in a stable position and ensure that it cannot tip over.

A house makes a difference (tips per animal species)
- Hamsters and gerbils: they like to use houses as permanent resting places. A sturdy hiding place plus extra tunnel(s) often provides the most peace and quiet.
- Rats and mice: they like multiple resting places (e.g., a house and an extra hiding place). For soft places to lie down, you can also look at hammocks .
- Guinea pigs and rabbits: appreciate a clear view and sufficient space. Hiding places with (preferably) more than one exit are often helpful, especially when the animals are kept together.
Maintenance & hygiene
Clean houses regularly and check for wear and tear. For wooden houses, spot cleaning is often the most practical. Smooth materials like ceramic, terracotta, or resin are generally easier to clean. Replace a house if it is no longer safe or hygienic.
