Hamster sand bath selection guide – sand, sandbox, and routine (dwarf & gold)
A sand bath is an important form of grooming for many hamsters and a pleasant "permanent spot" in their enclosure. It works best if you treat it as a separate zone , just like the digging zone and sleeping zone. DRD Rodent Shop® has been a specialist since 2011 and can help you choose which sand and sandbox is right for your hamster.

Checklist: sand bath properly arranged
- ✓ Choose sand that is intended for rodents and that feels pleasant (not sharp).
- ✓ Sand bath is a fixed zone in the enclosure (not sand everywhere).
- ✓ Filter/refresh regularly; remove wet spots immediately.
- ✓ Choose a container that is suitable for the size of your hamster and that is stable.
✓ Coat care
Many hamsters like to roll in sand to maintain their fur.
✓ Fixed place = peace
As a zone it is clear and helps with routine.
✓ Maintainable
Seven/refresh keeps it fresh without a stressful major cleanup.
Why a sand bath?
A sand bath supports grooming and natural behavior. Some hamsters also use it as a "toilet zone," which can keep the enclosure fresher (provided it's well-maintained).
Which sand is suitable?
Choose sand that's designed for rodents and is pleasant to use. Avoid sand that's sharp or very dusty. When in doubt, choose a proven, low-dust option from the category.

Which sandbox fits?
Dwarf hamsters only need a compact container they can roll around in; Syrian hamsters often need a larger container. Important: make sure it's stable (preferably on a solid floor or platform) so it doesn't sink.
How often and how do you maintain it?
- Daily/every other day: remove wet spots.
- Weekly: sift or partially replace the sand (depending on use).
- Completely refresh: when necessary, but maintain calm by not changing everything in the enclosure at once.
Placement as a fixed zone
Ideally, place the sand bath in the "compact" walking/feeding zone, not in the deepest digging area. This keeps it cleaner and more organized.
