The Budgerigar – Small, colorful and very sociable

The Budgerigar ( Melopsittacus undulatus ) is perhaps the most famous parakeet in the world and for good reason! This cheerful, small parrot has been a beloved pet for years because of its lively character, beautiful colors and social nature. With its curious look, long tail feathers and pleasant chirping, the Budgerigar is a real mood maker in the house.

Dimensions and weight

  • Body length: 18 to 24 cm
  • Weight: 30 to 40 grams

Small in size, but big in personality!

Origin: A sun worshipper from Australia

In the wild, the Budgerigar lives in the dry Australian outback, where it moves in large flocks across the landscape, always looking for food and water. These social animals avoid coastal areas, but feel completely at home inland. Budgerigars live in dynamic groups of sometimes hundreds of birds, communicating with each other through all kinds of sounds and body language. This natural behavior is also seen in tame parakeets: they thrive in company.

Color and pattern: a natural work of art

The original, natural colour of the Budgerigar is wild colour , also called yellow-green. The drawing of this bird is truly beautiful. The head is bright yellow, with violet-blue cheek patches and on both sides of the throat you can see three black dots. The long tail and subtle black waves on the wings complete the picture. Over the years, targeted breeding has created countless colour variations, from blue to white and from pied to opaline.

Did you know…?

The name "parakeet" is a collective name for several species of small parrots? Birds with the name "parakeet" can therefore be quite different genetically! For example, the Cockatiel is technically a small cockatoo. Yet all of these species belong to the order of the parrots (Psittaciformes) .

Social character – preferring to be together rather than alone

Budgies are real group animals . In the wild they do everything together: eat, play, sleep and communicate. That is why we strongly recommend to always keep them at least in pairs . Even better is a small group. Pay close attention to the composition:

  • Keep an even number of parakeets
  • Make sure there are no more dolls (females) than males

Females may display dominant behavior toward each other and sometimes even become aggressive if the group ratio is out of balance.

Intelligent busy bees

Budgies are curious, smart and playful. They love to explore their surroundings and play with toys or each other. Provide them with enough enrichment in their habitat, such as:

  • Climbing ropes
  • Swings
  • Bells
  • Mirrors (only if they are alone – preferably not structurally)
  • Food puzzles

A bored parakeet is prone to stress and behavioral problems. That is why daily variation in toys and interaction is important.

Taming and contact

Budgies can become very tame , especially if you start training them at a young age. They learn to recognize their caregiver, respond to voice sounds and sometimes even come and sit on your hand by themselves. With patience and regular training, some specimens can even learn words ! Please note: tame budgies always remain animals with their own will. Respect and trust are the basis of a good bond.

The right housing for budgies

A good living environment is crucial. Therefore, ensure:

  • A spacious cage or aviary with horizontal bars for climbing
  • Various perches (natural wood is ideal)
  • Daylight and ventilation , without draughts
  • Company and daily attention

The cage should be large enough for them to fly. Ideally, you should also give them free-flying time in a safe space every day .

Nutrition and care

Budgies need a varied diet . In addition to a good basic diet such as budgie seed mixes or extruded pellets , you can treat them to:

  • Fresh vegetables (e.g. carrot, pepper, broccoli)
  • Green branches (such as willow or fruit tree)
  • Fresh herbs (such as basil, parsley)
  • Grit and cuttlefish for calcium supply

Be careful with fruit and snacks – give them in moderation.

Why a budgie?

Budgies are perfect pets for those looking for a lively, intelligent and sociable animal. They are relatively easy to care for, responsive to their environment and bring a lot of fun with their chatter, singing and playful behaviour.
