Degus like to sit on elevated plateaus. Degus are excellent jumpers and runs. In addition to a spacious cage with sufficient challenge and gnawing material, plateaus and ladders can enrich the stay for the animals.
Degus are real rodents. The most ideal is therefore a gnawing-proof plateau. An example of a gnawing-resistant plateau is a plateau made of aluminum. These will not be able to gnaw the degus, which is why a gnawing-proof plateau will last by far the longest. The wooden plateaus are also very popular. However, wood has the major disadvantage that the degus can gnaw it to pieces. That is why it is important to always offer sufficient alternative gnawing material / gnawing wood. Some caution is also advised with plateaus with nails or staples. These items must be checked daily. The platform must be replaced the moment the degu has gnawed so far that a nail or staple is almost exposed. We also have nail-free wooden platforms. These are rodent-proof, but will always last less than a rodent-proof plateau.
